Redefine warehouse automation with Dexion’s MDS ASRS, a four-way shuttle system
Dexion has introduced the MDS ASRS, a shuttle-based automated storage and retrieval system as a more agile and flexible alternative to conventional crane automation in warehouses.
The MDS ASRS works well in both new and existing warehouse setups, covering ambient, chilled and frozen storage as low as -25°C. It adapts to different layouts, whether regular or irregular, and supports both low and high-bay facilities. With optimal capacity ranging from 1,000 to 40,000 pallet locations and beyond, it serves industries including pharmaceuticals, food and beverage, retail, manufacturing, and third-party logistics (3PLs).
“Crane-based systems are limited to about 25 pallets per hour,” explained Damian Cross, Group Managing Director of Dexion Asia Pacific. “By contrast, the MDS ASRS can achieve 100 to 200 pallets per hour, giving operators much higher throughput and faster response to demand.”
Dexion emphasises the system’s ability to support high-density storage, stock buffering, sorting, and inventory management using both FIFO and LIFO methods. The design can be adjusted to suit different products and handle diverse operational demands such as small batch sizes, large volumes, or multiple SKUs. The accuracy and speed of storage & retrieval is determined by Datamatrix Location Barcode which supports millimetre-level shuttle navigation, even in dusty or high-use environments.
The software framework is developed with highly intelligent capabilities such as Mass Shuttle Swarming technology for optimum routing and traffic management whilst Zero Code Shuttle scaling integrates new shuttles within seconds. This allows companies to boost productivity exponentially during peak seasons with additional shuttles and scale down when operations resume to normal.
The MDS system integrates with warehouse management systems and ERP platforms through a locally hosted cloud setup behind the host firewall. The system complies with IT security requirements using encrypted communication protocols to access the Application Programming Application (API). This means that the system is protected against unauthorised access malicious cyber activity. The software also promises compatibility with future versions and ease of scaling up to serve growing capacities.
“Traditional cranes require a larger power draw to handle peak loads,” added Cross. “The MDS ASRS spreads activities across lightweight shuttles, which keep energy usage consistent and much lower overall.”
Energy-efficient operation extends the lifespan of components, while high throughput and labor savings could lead to a return on investment as quickly as 12 to 18 months. Additional benefits include lower maintenance costs, fewer failure points, and faster troubleshooting, all of which contribute to the system’s optimal performance.
As industries face increasing pressure for efficiency and adaptability, Dexion’s MDS ASRS is the solution for companies looking to perform at higher throughputs, reduced energy use, and to maintain reliable performance in demanding environments.
